Build Catalog Ads with URL Parameters

Adding URL parameters to the end of your URL can help you understand the effectiveness of your dynamic product ad (DPA) or product ad. When you add URL parameters, you can:

  • Identify the traffic source
  • Find where visitors are coming from
  • Determine how mediums are contributing to site visits

URL parameters work best when using a third-party analytics tool to track the results. Since parameters can’t be changed after creating an ad, we strongly recommend reviewing its setup before hitting publish.

Build an ad with URL parameters

  1. In the ads tab on the dashboard, select Create Ad.
  2. Choose a catalog ad group. Don’t have a catalog sales campaign yet? Here’s how to get started.
  3. Choose catalog as your destination URL source.
  4. Select add URL parameters and choose how to add your parameters:
    • Parameter builder lets you add dynamic parameter keys. You can also create custom parameters and assign unique keys. This method works best when you need more flexibility or need to add non-standard parameters.
    • Paste URL parses your URL and automatically sets your parameters and parameter keys. We recommend this if your URL already contains parameters.
  5. Test your setup with Preview URL. This will open a sample URL from your catalog with your parameters. Check that keys and values are being passed as expected. Preview URL
  6. When done, finish setting up the rest of your ad. You can also set up third-party measurement.

Supported dynamic parameter values

  • {{CAMPAIGN_ID}}
  • {{CAMPAIGN_NAME}}
  • {{ADGROUP_ID}}
  • {{ADGROUP_NAME}}
  • {{CREATIVE_ID}}
  • {{AD_ID}}
  • {{AD_NAME}}
  • {{POST_ID}}

Things to know

Add a value for all basic keys

Set a value for source, medium, campaign, and content for best results. Need help deciding which value to use? Here are our recommendations:

KeyValue
Sourcereddit
Medium{{ADVERTISER_ID}}
Campaign{{CAMPAIGN_ID}}-{{ADGROUP_NAME}}
Content{{AD_ID}}-{{AD_NAME}}
Parameters can’t be changed after publishing

We strongly recommend testing and making any necessary changes before publishing your ad. After you hit publish, you’ll need to create a new ad to edit your parameters.

URL parameters are applied to all destination URLs in the ad

If you need to choose a different destination URL for one product, we recommend creating a product ad group:

  1. In the ad groups tab on the dashboard, select Create Ad Group.
  2. Choose your catalog campaign.
  3. For product selection, choose manual. This will let you choose products from your catalog. Choose manual
  4. Set up the rest of your ad group.
  5. Build an ad with URL parameters. Remember to choose the right product for your ad.
Only add URL parameters at the catalog or ad level

You don’t need to use the parameter builder if you have already added URL parameters at the catalog level.
