Brand Safety

We want Reddit to be a safe and useful space for our users and advertisers. We take an all-hands-on-deck approach to safety, so you can uphold your brand's standards, while our community upholds our own.

User safety

We use a combination of policy, enforcement practices, and dedicated internal teams to keep Reddit safe for all.

  • Reddit staff enforce core policy for all behavior on our platform.
  • Reddit's community structure allows us to take action against entire communities that don't act in accordance with our policies, so we don't have to chase down individual users.
  • All content on Reddit must abide by our site-wide Reddit Rules.

Community moderation

Safety on Reddit is supported by dedicated human moderators (mods) for each community and a voting system powered by redditors.

  • Every community is started and managed by mods who set their own standards for conduct and “appropriate” content—beyond Reddit's sitewide content policy and terms of service. They decide, monitor, and enforce community rules.
  • The upvote/downvote system is core to the Reddit experience. It empowers our users to boost quality content and conversation to the top, minimize content that detracts from the conversation, reward users for strong engagement, and self-police by reporting inappropriate behavior.

Brand safety controls for advertisers

At the advertiser level, we offer proactive solutions focused on ensuring a safe environment for ads that run on Reddit.

Content guidelines for ads

Reddit only shows ads next to posts that meet our brand safety standards and those of our advertising partners.

We don't allow ads to run alongside the following types of content:

  • Adult and sexually explicit content
  • Hate speech, profanity, and offensive content
  • Sensitive content related to support and identity
  • Gore and graphic content
  • Illegal content

We're proactive in ensuring the brand safety of advertisers:

  • We only allow ads to run in communities that are deemed appropriate for ads.
  • We're constantly reviewing and refining the list of permissible communities.
  • We use machine learning and human review to rate communities before they're allowed to appear next to ads.

Advertiser brand safety controls

  • Comments on/off: Advertisers choose if they want to allow comments on their ads.
  • Community exclusion: Brands can keep their ads out of specific community feeds.
  • Inventory types: Brands can choose the inventory that aligns best with their brand, campaign message, or audience goals.
