Advertiser Reddit User Content Guidelines
TL;DR
Reddit consists of sites called “subreddits”, which primarily contain user-generated content (“Reddit User Content”). Reddit may allow you to use Reddit User Content in your Ads, provided you obtain user consent to do so, comply with Section 8 of the Reddit Advertising Services Agreement and these guidelines.
Do
- Obtain consent. In other words, you must obtain express written consent to use Reddit User Content in your Ads from the User who posted the content. This consent must clearly outline the scope of the use (e.g. what, how, when and where) and if the username will be shown. You must also obtain Reddit’s prior written authorization if you intend to use i) any Reddit IP (e.g., name, logo, or brand elements) in your Ads, or ii) the Reddit User Content off Reddit.
- Remove personal or potentially sensitive information. User details, images of individuals or any other personally identifiable or potentially sensitive information must be removed. As a general rule, Usernames should be excluded from Ads appearing off Reddit. Any exception to this requires documented, prior written approval from both the User and Reddit.
- Bear in mind third-party rights. The Reddit User Content may not be original to the User. You use it at your own risk and you should be considerate of any third-party rights. For example, subreddit names may contain registered trademarks of Reddit or a third party; you must not use these without a license.
- Avoid negative comments. Do not use Reddit User Content which disparages Reddit or any other individual or third party.
- Follow Reddit’s terms and policies. Your use of Reddit User Content must comply with the Reddit Advertising Services Agreement and other related terms and policies. In particular, do not use Reddit User Content which breaches the Reddit Rules.
- Comply with law. You are responsible for compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, including data protection laws.
Don’t
- Commercialise or offer gifts. Neither Reddit User Content or User consent should be obtained in return for gifts or other incentives. Relatedly, you must not give gifts or other incentives in return for positive reviews of your brand or criticisms of any third parties (e.g. your competitors). Fake testimonials and misleading advertisements are illegal under most international laws.
- Imply endorsement. Your Ad or use of Reddit User Content must not imply any endorsement from Reddit of your brand, products or services or suggest that the sentiment in the Reddit User Content is that of Reddit’s (and not the User’s). In addition, you must not use a subreddit name in your Ads in a way which could imply endorsement of your brand, products or services without Moderator consent.
- Modify or mimic Reddit User Content. It is important that Reddit is a place for authentic conversations. Modifications to Reddit User Content should be strictly limited to using an ellipsis (
[...]) to denote content omitted for brevity or censoring of explicit language. The overall context should not be altered. In addition, creating "fake" Reddit User Content or mimicking the appearance of a real User post is prohibited. - Use inappropriate content. Do not use Reddit User Content which could potentially cause offense, upset or alarm. Avoid content that appears to involve or originate from a minor.
